Planning a celebration is not easy, especially if you're doing one for the people you love most. You want them to enjoy themselves, and also to provide a different experience each time.

But having an idea is a battle half won, and here are a few inspiring birthday celebration ideas to steal from Singapore celebs to make sure your loved ones have an enjoyable day, from dinner with a view to great party venues and creative birthday cakes.

1. Dine with a view

So you’ve set your mind on a staycay at Sentosa. Why not up your game with an ocean view dinner? Well, aquarium view, to be exact. Zoe Tay brought her husband and fam to a dinner at Ocean Restaurant at Equarius Hotel. The menu is curated by Chef Olivier Bellin, a two-star Michelin chef from L’Auberge des Glazicks in Brittany. Enjoy the delectable food as you watch manta rays, reef sharks and tropical fishes swim past you.

2. Organise super-fun activities

One of the best parties to hold for kids is one that is filled with activities, or best yet, at a location where they can find activities to do even on their own. Which is why we love Fann Wong and Christopher Lee’s idea of holding a birthday party for their son, Zed, at Superpark. Adults can enjoy the finger food at the buffet table (catered separately), while kids get to bounce around with friends. It’s a win for everyone!

3. Get hands-on

If the fam loves a good hands-on activity, take a leaf out of Sheila Sim’s husband Deon Woo’s book and organise a tufting workshop for your hubby and kids. You can hang the rugs in your living room as proof of the precious time spent together. For more craft-y ideas, Deon previously took Sheila to terrarium and splash art workshops. Very thoughtful.

4. There’s a game for everyone

Kids love games, but some days, it can be a chore to come up with interesting ones for a party. Here's a hack — get a party venue that already comes with games. For instance, you can opt to do one at Timezone, like Tay Kewei and Alfred Sim did for their son’s birthday. The party package includes at least 90 minutes of play at some machines/stations, 500 e-tickets for child attendees, and 2,500 e-tickets for the birthday child. If your kiddo loves arcade games, they’d love this venue!

5. Home sweet home

Prefer to have a party in your own home, but not sure how to make it look party-ready? Get inspired by Nurul Aini, who used an enclave in her house to set up a party corner for her daughter’s birthday! Decorate it with balloons, streamers, a table for cake, and you’re all set. Don’t have an enclave? Just use any wall and decorate to your heart’s content! Pinterest is a good place to start if you’re looking for party decor ideas.

6. Healthy eating

If you prefer to keep things casual, a cosy stay-home celebration with a cake is always a good idea. And if the birthday person in question doesn't have a sweet tooth, here's a great idea from Yvonne Lim. The actress made a watermelon birthday cake for her husband, carving a two-tier cake out of watermelons, and decorated it with blueberries, grapes and other fruits. We’re impressed by how amazing it looks!

7. Get in the water

Love the water? Why not rent a boat for a party? Last year, Diana Ser wanted a kelong dinner for her birthday, but the place had closed down, so her husband James Lye rented a boat instead. While they kept their celebrations small, there’s no reason for you not to invite your extended family or friends, as long as the boat’s capacity allow for it. Just make sure the kids don’t get seasick!

8. Commit to a theme

If your kid loves Frozen, Marvel or any character, why not make it the theme of the party? Cheryl Wee had a Frozen-themed birthday party for her daughter’s third birthday, complete with an Elsa standee. Make it a family bonding activity by getting everyone in on the prep work, such as inflating balloons or setting up the table!

9. Get help with planning

Jeffrey Xu booked a stay at Marina Bay Sands to celebrate Felicia Chin’s win at the Star Awards, and she wasn’t the only one impressed by the effort that the hotel staff put into the celebration! From decorating the room with balloons and printed photos, they pulled no stops at making sure Felicia felt celebrated. If that sounds like the kind of celebration you would love to have for your husband or kid, why not book a stay at MBS?

10. Keep it small

What would your kid remember from their first birthday? If you’re as practical as radio DJ Natasha Faisal and say they’re unlikely to remember anything, skip that huge celebration, and celebrate in small ways. Natasha chose to keep it simple by whipping up pancakes, banana cake, and a peach vanilla cotton cake, which looked absolutely delicious. The good news is, even if you messed up the cake, your young kid likely won't remember.
