Let’s be honest: Blowdrying your hair can be a real chore sometimes. But while using higher heat settings can accelerate drying time, it can also create serious damage on your scalp and hair. Prolonged use of extreme heat makes your scalp more sensitive, damages hair follicles, and leaves hair brittle, thin, dry and rough.
However, it’s not all gloom and doom for the time-strapped. You can still achieve salon-worthy blow-outs in record time and without harming your crowning glory. British electronics brand Dyson has launched new and improved attachments for its Supersonic hair-dryer and Airwrap hair-styler. These game-changing hair tools help accelerate drying and styling time, and also enhance your overall hair-styling experience.
In August, Dyson invited us to Seoul to meet award-winning Korean celebrity hairstylist Park Jehee, who demonstrated how to use these attachments to achieve a voluminous blowout as per your favourite Korean stars. Jehee, whose celebrity clientele includes Korean stars like Lee Hae Young, Yoo In Young and Blackpink’s Jennie, is an industry expert with 20 years’ experience, so she’s the perfect person to dish out advice.
Keep reading for Jehee’s top five blowdrying and hair-styling tips to achieve fuller-looking hair throughout the day with the help of the new Dyson attachments:
Give lifeless locks a lift by blow-drying from the roots before aiming the nozzle downwards to help close the hair cuticle for a smooth and shiny finish, Jehee says. Use Dyson’s new Gentle Air Dryer attachment that goes on the Supersonic — it generates a softer and more diffused airflow, which lowers the temperature that hits your scalp, all without compromising on drying speed and power. Plus, lower heat also helps prevent coloured hair from fading so quickly.
Tip #2: Use a diffuser to create volume

It’s the secret to Korean celebrities’ natural, bouncy curls, says Jehee. So if you have permed or naturally wavy hair, a diffuser helps define your waves and curls while minimising frizz. The re-engineered diffuser for the Dyson Supersonic hair-dryer works to distribute air flow more evenly for quick and precise drying without scalding your scalp. It also boasts longer prongs for those with thicker hair, or if you want more lift at the roots. To create even more volume, hold it close to your scalp at an area that tends to look flat (such as the crown) and then twist the nozzle slightly.
Tip #3: Create a natural wave

Long, straight hair can weigh down tresses, making it look flat and sometimes, difficult to style. Give it a volume boost by adding waves with the Dyson Airwrap styler — it now comes with longer barrels that makes drying faster and curling, more effortless.
You can also create a wavy look with a round brush and hair concentrator. A concentrator is an accessory with a flat narrow tip that attaches to the end of your hair dryer and works to direct air flow to a specific section of hair to give you a sleeker, smoother, frizz-free finish. Jehee recommends using the Dyson’s re-engineered styling concentrator that’s thinner and wider than before to give you more control and precision when blowdrying your mane. “Give a flick at the end to create a natural wave,” she advises.

Tip #4: Don’t forget your fringe

For fringe or bangs that tend to look flat, limp and lifeless, the Dyson Airwrap’s new small smoothing brush is great as it gives you greater control when working with smaller sections of hair. To create a voluminous fringe, lift at the roots for four to five seconds, then brush outwards slowly.
Tip #5: Set with a blast of cool air

This last but crucial step is necessary if you want your blowout to last longer, and it only takes a few seconds. Blast your mane with cool air (use the “cool shot” button on the Dyson Supersonic or Airwrap), count to five and release. This helps seal the hair cuticle for glossier-looking hair.
The new Dyson Supersonic attachments (gentle air dryer, re-engineered diffuser and styling concentrator), $49 each, are available at the Dyson Demo Store — Beauty Lab at Funan, the Dyson Mall Demo Zone at Westgate and online.
