The Force is strong this week as the world prepares for the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. And while the new Star Wars films by Disney remain entertaining and thrilling, they also present a greater variety of characters with equality at its core. And it’s refreshing to see so many new female characters with strong personality. In the original Star Wars trilogy, this resistance leader is one of the rare few female characters with a speaking role, and she presents a strong commanding presence yet with femininity – something very rare in films in the 1970s and 80s. Strong and independent female characters are set to be a mainstay in the new Star Wars movie, and the trailblazer is the main female character introduced in Episode VII’s The Force Awakens.
