It’s that time of the year again when we come together to celebrate the best and brightest women in Singapore! As part of The Great Women Of Our Time awards 2019, The Weekly paid tribute to 18 inspiring trailblazers on October 24.

These are your winners!

Held at the swanky Mediterranean-inspired rooftop restaurant and sky bar, Artemis Grill, guests were treated to a breathtaking view of the CBD from the 40th floor of the CapitaGreen building and an even more exciting night filled with inspirational and empowering camaraderie that showcased the best of sisterhood.

The winners from the six categories – Arts & Media; Design & Style; Finance & Commerce; Public Service & Education; Science & Technology; and Sports, Health & Wellness; – were announced. Along with winners for special subsidiary awards: The Lancôme Visionary Award from Main Presenter Lancôme; the Pandora Spirited Woman Award from Presenter Pandora, and for The Weekly’s Most Inspiring Woman as voted by readers.

Arts & Media Winner: Tan Kheng Hua

An award-winning actress-producer, Kheng Hua made waves as Margaret in the iconic Singapore
sitcom Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd. She is also a prolific theatre actress and has created and directed
stage content of all genres. Playing Kerry Chu in 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians, she joined a history-making Hollywood production that was the first to feature an all-Asian cast in over 25 years.

Design & Style Winner: Vivien Leong

With over 14 years of experience at award-winning architectural practices in Singapore and the UK, Vivien has wide-ranging skills in executing diverse typologies, comprising leisure, office, transportation, education, and mixed-use developments. When she was with CPG Consultants in 2011, Vivien led the team to complete the iconic Nanyang Technological University Learning Hub.

Public Service & Education Winner: Adeline Thong

A former counselor for youths, Adeline, has opened up her home over the last decade to support young people in need of a roof over their heads. Driven by a desire to do good, Adeline aims to support more teenagers in any way that she can and says it is up to Singaporeans to make giving back and helping others a reality.

Finance & Commerce Winner: Val Yap

Founded by Val in 2016, PolicyPal aims to help customers understand their insurance coverage better by allowing them to organise and track all their insurance products in one dashboard. To date, PolicyPal has 16 carriers, 50,000 users, and manages insurance premiums worth up to $70 million on the platform.

Science & Technology Winner: Dr Andie Ang

Passionate about protecting the endangered Raffles’ banded langur, a species of leaf-eating monkeys found only in Singapore and southern Malaysia, Dr Ang chairs the Raffles’ Banded Langur Working Group to study and conserve the species. She developed an interest in conservation as a young girl, after helping to repatriate her family’s pet monkey back to Africa.

Sports, Health & Wellness Winners: [TIE] Gillian Tee and Nurshahidah Roslie

By using technology and integrating it into an elderly care model, Gillian and her partners offer expert, flexible and personalised home and nursing care so that seniors can continue to live independently at home. In 2017, Gillian was given a special mention by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in his National Day Rally speech.

Nicknamed “The Sniper”, Nurshahidah was the World Boxing Council’s Asian Female Champion of the Year 2017 and is also the highest-ranking female featherweight boxer from Asia as of May 2018. Growing up, Nurshahidah defied the odds, kicking gender norms to the curb when she chose to pursue the traditionally male-dominated sport of boxing.

Lancôme Visionary Award Winner: Janine Teo

Passionate about leveraging technology to solve social problems in a sustainable and scalable way, Janine founded Solve Education! in 2015 with the mission to deliver quality education to anyone. Notably, she is also the first Asian to receive the international intellectual Benefits to Society Award 2018 by Mensa International.

Pandora Spirited Woman Award Winner: Dr Claudine Pang

Dr Pang has more than 15 years of ophthalmology experience and has performed thousands of cataract and retinal surgeries making her one of the most experienced cataract surgeons in Singapore. She strongly believes that technology can help improve awareness on eye health and, with that belief, has created the nation’s first free mobile app for eye health.

The Singapore Women's Weekly's Most Inspiring Woman Award: Karen Chan

Singapore’s first film collection was successfully inscribed into the UNESCO Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Register while under Karen’s leadership. In charge of helming the Asian Film Archive since 2006, Karen directly contributes to archiving and library-related tasks that ensure the promotion and preservation of Singapore’s cinematic heritage.
