13 Hardy Houseplants You Probably Won't Kill
1. Heartleaf Philodendron
image

Affectionately called the sweetheart plant because of its unmistakeable heart-shaped leaves, this climbing plant is easy to grow and perfect for hanging in your balcony or bathroom. It also thrives in humid weather, but keep it in a bright but shady spot away from direct sunlight, and water when the soil feels dry. However, it’s a poisonous plant so keep out of reach from children and pets.

2. Aloe Vera

You probably know the aloe vera for its skin-soothing benefits, but this succulent is also extremely hardy and can survive in dry conditions. It thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. Water thoroughly when the soil feels dry, about once or twice a week.

3. Fittonia (Nerve Plant)

Usually seen in closed, self-sustaining terrariums, these hardy plants are really fast growers so you might want to consider planting them in a slightly bigger pot first. They thrive in humid conditions so the bathroom is a perfect place to keep them. Water about once a week.

4. Peace Lily

Spathiphyllum likes to be kept in a well-lit spot out of direct sunlight. Give it a weekly watering, plus a spritz in between.

5. Dracaena

This is probably one the easiest plants to care for. Just ensure soil dries out completely between waterings, and choose a position in bright filtered light.

6. Snake Plant

Otherwise known as sansevieria trifasciata, or mother-in-law’s tongue, this one’s super easy to look after, and only needs one spray of water a week. It prefers bright light, but is also tolerant of warm shady spots. Group with other plants.

7. Guzmania Bromeliad

If you’re after a flowering plant without the high maintenance, this is the one for you. Keep it in a shady spot and water it once a week. Too easy!

8. Maidenhair Fern

These ferns, also known as adiantum, provide a softer indoor look than most other low-maintenance plants. Just give them a bit of water every day.

9. Zanzibar Gem

These plants with their shiny waxy leaves are called gems for a reason – they’re practically indestructible! They’re also known as ZZ plants or welcome plants. Be careful of giving them too much water – once a fortnight is enough.

10. Orchid

Aside from having one of the most glamorous flowers around, orchids are easy to grow and need only two to three tablespoons of water every two weeks.

11. Money Plant

Also commonly called golden pothos or devil’s ivy, these plants thrive in partial sunlight and symbolise prosperity, wealth and happiness as they grow quickly even without much care. Water every seven to 10 days.

12. Swiss Cheese Plant (Monstera)

If you prefer big, lush leaves, this evergreen plant is a great option as it can grow virtually anywhere indoors, even in more shady spots of your home. Also known as the monstera adonsonii, it just needs watering once a week!

13. Tillandsia

These hardy air plants don’t require soil to grow and can thrive under artificial light, making them great for offices too. It’s okay to snip off dried ends, and it’s recommended to mist them with water once a week, or soak them in water once a month.
