If you love Japanese snacks and produce, be sure to head on down to one of these supermarkets in Singapore that stock up these yummy authentic items.

Love Japanese food and snacks? Whether you’re throwing a sushi-themed dinner party or simply miss that snack you last had in Tokyo, you no longer have to fly all the way to Japan or pray that you end up on a transiting flight to Narita or Haneda Airport just to purchase some of your favourite Japanese foods.

Japanese supermarkets are popping up everywhere in Singapore, selling a host of fresh and packaged items ranging from seafood to snacks and sauces, all specially flown in from the land of the rising sun. The only drawback? You’ll want to buy everything!

1. Meidi-Ya

Perhaps one of the first few Japanese marketplaces to open in Singapore, Meidi-Ya is a favourite amongst locals and Japanese expats – and they’re just opened their second outlet at Great World City! If you’re looking for an all-rounder supermarket to do your weekly grocery trips, this is it, although items may seem a little pricier. They also sell ready-made sushi platters and bento boxes for fast meals.

Meidi-Ya Supermarket has two outlets: #B1-50 Liang Court Shopping Centre; and #B2-120 Great World City.

2. Don Don Donki

This Japanese discount store that sells basically anything and everything, also sells an incredible, albeit slightly dizzying, array of groceries too. You can find all sorts of Japanese goods here, from fresh to frozen and everything inbetween, and they even serve up piping hot baked sweet potato in case you have the munchies while grocery-shopping. Fair warning though: The background jingle that’s played 24/7 can get stuck in your head.

Don Don Donki has four outlets: #B1-01 to B1-85 Square 2 Novena; B2 City Square Mall; Level 2 and 3 at 100AM; B1 and B2 at Orchard Central.

3. Isuramuya Japanese Restaurant & Marketplace

This Japanese restaurant and marketplace serves up a dose of authenticity in terms of food and produce available. All items are flown directly from Japan and the best part? It’s the only marketplace that sells Halal Japanese goodies and snacks.

Isuramuya is at #04-10 JCube. 

4. Kuriya

At Kuriya, seafood gets flown in thrice weekly from Japan and is sold immediately. Besides fresh produce, ready-made sushi party platters, snacks and drinks are also available. Bonus: Chat up the fish specialists at either one of Kuriya’s 10 marketplaces in Singapore and gain some cooking tips and tricks.

Kuriya has 10 outlets: #B1-77 Jurong Point; #B1-03 Nex; #B1-17 Causeway Point; #B1-01 JEM; #B1-20 Waterway Point; #B1-07 Tampines 1; #B1-137 Tiong Bahru Plaza; #B1-152 Northpoint City; AMK Hub #B2-52; and #B1-07 Great World City (closed for renovation till 2020).

5. Zairyo

Want your Japanese groceries delivered to your doorstep? Now you can, with this online gourmet Japanese grocer which sells freshly-imported premium Japanese goods from ikura to uni, as well as specialty condiments, noodles and more. You can also find recipes on their website to kickstart your Japanese culinary journey.

There’s a basic delivery fee of $10, unless you order $100 and above. If you prefer to collect your goods personally, you can pick them up from their Yishun warehouse.

6. Isetan Supermarket

This Japanese supermarket stocks a great selection of fresh fruits and veggies flown in from Japan (we’re talking Amera tomatoes from Shizuoka and white sweet corn and Shimeiji mushrooms), as well as a range of sake and snacks. But beyond the grocery aspect, the store also serves up ready-to-eat food and drinks, with an in-store bar and even a bakery.

Isetan Supermarket has two outlets: Shaw Centre Lido, Basement; and #B2-01 Westgate.

7. Fish Mart Sakuraya

A quick trip to this minimart can get you – frozen ingredients, Japanese rice, alcohol, Japanese tidbits, ice-cream and beverages. Sakuraya is also famous for its value for money seafood such as salmon and tuna. You can choose the best looking fish from the showcase cabinet. There’s also a dining area for patrons wanting to savour fresh seafood and other dishes.

Sakuraya Fish Market has four outlets: #B1-50/51/52 West Coast Plaza; #B1-84D Parkway Parade; #01-32 Anchorpoint; and #02-01 The Seletar Mall.

8. Iroha Mart

This Japanese specialty store is a haven for lovers of Japanese confectionery, bottled drinks, cup noodles, you name it. Here you can find genuine food items that aren’t in your typical convenience store, such as the new Instant Mash Potato from Calbee. Perfect for stocking up on goodies for your guests or to bring to a picnic or house party!

Iroha Mart has two outlets: #B2-16/17 Plaza Singapura; and #B1-11 Chinatown Point.

9. J-Mart

The retail outlet of the Japan Prestige Sake Association, J-Mart is the best place to get authentic Japanese alcohol. Premium batches of sake are sold here at an affordable rate. You can also find a selection of chilled goods, sweets, snacks and condiments to go with your sake.

J-Mart is at #B1-28 The Star Vista; #B1-09 I12 Katong; and #B1-06 Century Square.

10. Yamakawa Super

Yamakawa brings in Japanese confectionaries and beverages that are not sold in local supermarkets. If you’re feeling adventurous, the supermart stocks over 1,000 snacks, ice cream and grocery items like wasabi-flavoured soda, pudding-flavoured biscuits and other uniquely creative snacks to try.

Yamakawa Super has two outlets: #B1-28B Clarke Quay Central, and #02-498/499 Suntec City.
