Dislocations: Memory & Meaning of the Fall of Singapore, 1942
Our history - especially the dark times of World War II - is something that children can and should learn about from a young age. If you are looking for a way to start the conversation with your kids (or maybe your little ones just have a love for history), then consider heading down to the National Museum of Singapore's latest exhibition.
Dislocations is a showcase that takes the heavy topic of the war and turns it into a family-friendly talking point. The experience begins before you even step into the doors of the museum; a pre-exhibition visual novel, Sunset in Singapore, allows visitors of all ages to take on the role of someone during the war. You can choose to be a civilian, a soldier, etc, and play from their perspective to learn about the experience of these people during the war.
You and your kids will also be able to listen to three shortlisted accounts of the time from seniors who experienced the war as children. Your family will learn about how this major event affected them when they were just children and the memories that were passed down to them from their own parents.
And if you're worried that your kids may get bored during the exhibition, don't worry about it! The exhibition makes use of augmented reality and gamification that will make for an interactive and fun time for the little ones.
Happening from now to 29 May 2022. Admission is free. Located at the National Museum of Singapore, 93 Stamford Road, Singapore 178897. Find out more here.
Want to learn about Peranakan culture without leaving your home? This month, the Asian Civilisation's Museum 'Let's Learn About...' website page is full of information about Peranakans and the wares in the collection. You and your kids can take a look at a plate, a kamcheng (covered jars), and a spoon that the museum has. Read more about each item's history, when it was found, and the symbolism of the everyday items under each picture.
You can also create your own Nyonya artwork by copying the motifs you learnt about and colouring them in with bright colours.
From now until 3 March 2022. Admission is free. It is an online event. Find out more here.

You won't want to miss the walk around the Tanglin Core either. Established in 1859, it is the oldest part of the gardens that is a must-see, even for Singaporeans.
