8 Tips To Prepare For A Maternity Shoot In Singapore
A quick guide to preparing for a comfortable and memorable maternity photoshoot in hot and humid Singapore

Congrats on your pregnancy! While pregnancy can be a challenging and tiring journey, the joy and anticipation of impending motherhood is such an amazing thing to be celebrated and commemorated at the same time.
A maternity photoshoot is a beautiful way to celebrate your personal pregnancy journey and capture the unique and fleeting moments before your baby arrives. If you’re planning to have one but aren’t sure how to prepare for it, these are some practical tips to help ensure you have a smooth and enjoyable maternity photoshoot — so you can relax on the day, smile and say "baby”!
1. Find the right photographer whose style resonates with you
Sourcing the right photographer is half the job done, really. You may begin by researching and browsing the works of photographers online who specialise in maternity photography — Instagram is an endless sweet catalogue of those, and mommy friends are usually more than glad to recommend the ones they’ve engaged or admired. Look for a portfolio that resonates with your style, personal aesthetic and vision. It's also essential to choose a photographer who can make you feel comfortable and confident during the shoot, so feel free to interview them over the phone before committing to a decision. Ask lots of questions about their artistic process, share your vision with them and ask for practical advice for the shoot. Not enjoying their tone, personality, work ethic or general vibe over emails or on the phone signals early that you’re probably better off looking elsewhere.
Some popular studios and photographers we like in Singapore include Firefly Photography which offers both affordable studio packages and outdoor shoots, oft-featured Sugarlight Photography for capturing some incredibly gorgeous outdoor moments, and White Room Studio which produces stunning glamour mama shots. Instagram is also a great place to look for independent photographers for a more avant-garde feel. We like the abstract, nostalgic feel of the Issh Collective, and Andrea Galkova’s vivid, lively natural compositions.
2. Decide when you're most comfortable in your pregnancy to have the shoot
Timing is crucial when it comes to maternity shoots. You want your baby bump to be prominently pronounced, but you don’t want to be so heavy and tired that you can’t enjoy the experience. Scheduling your maternity photoshoot during your late second or early third trimester is probably ideal, since this is when your baby bump can be beautifully displayed, and you're most likely feeling energetic and comfortable enough to enjoy the occasion. Some photographers would recommend doing the shoot later in the third trimester for the best photographic effect, but this is purely up to your own discretion.
3. Pick your priorities for the shoot location
Decide on a location that best reflects your personality, style or journey. Popular options include outdoor settings like parks, gardens, or the beach for a natural and serene backdrop, e.g. Flower Dome, Singapore Botanic Gardens, East Coast Park, Sentosa, etc. Indoor settings can include your home, a cosy studio, or a beautifully decorated baby room.
Personally, significant locations can add even greater meaning to how you commemorate this milestone as a couple, E.g. where you had your first date, where he proposed, your favourite date spot, etc. Depending on your choice of location, your photographer should recommend the ideal time of day for the shoot — if at the beach, at sunrise for instance so that they can capture the best natural light.
4. Pick something pretty to wear that allows freedom of movement
It is extremely important that you feel both beautiful and comfortable at your shoot. Flowing dresses, maxi gowns, or fitted outfits that accentuate your belly are excellent choices. If you’re comfortable, you may also consider baring your belly for some pictures — after all, that perfectly displays the absolute beauty of motherhood. When it comes to colour, print and texture, though, sometimes less is more. It really depends on your location choice, and you should definitely seek your photographer’s specific advice on this. A patterned outfit would certainly clash with an already noisy backdrop, and it is usually advisable if you’re shooting outdoors amid the greenery to stick to a pastel palette and block colours. Make sure to coordinate with the others in the shoot, so you and your partner’s or children’s clothing don’t clash or repeat too much.
5. Ensure you look your best with lots of prep
It’s grooming time! Consider getting your hair and makeup professionally done, since this can both boost your confidence and ensure you look your best. If you prefer to do it yourself, try keeping your makeup and hairstyling simple and natural. Avoid going overboard with the makeup and styling, because you still want to look like your usual self. You’ll look your best when you’re feeling comfortable, relaxed and natural, not stressing about keeping every strand of hair in place or having to constantly touch up your makeup.
Likewise, pack wisely for the shoot — don't show up empty-handed! Bring tissues and blotting paper to dab away any excess shine, since pregnant women tend to overheat, and a handheld fan to keep yourself cool, especially if it's in an outdoor location in Singapore (we can attest that even indoor studios tend to get warm during shoots). If your husband's tagging along, consider getting him to bring a small camp chair for you to rest in between shots. A cooler box filled with iced drinks is a great idea for staying cool and relaxed, too.
6. Consider possible props and poses
Think about incorporating personal items or props that hold meaning for you and your partner. Ultrasound images, baby shoes, or a cute onesie can add a sentimental touch to your photos. Discuss posing and expressions with your photographer. They can guide you in creating candid and tender moments.
Be open to experimenting with a variety of poses, including ones that focus on your baby bump or ones that capture intimate moments with your partner. In general, a skilled photographer will be adept at guiding your poses, making you feel comfortable during the shoot and capturing your best moments. If you'd prefer to prepare beforehand, curate a Pinterest board with various maternity poses and show these to your photographer.
7. Stay hydrated, rested and fed
It is super important, especially since you’re pregnant, to ensure that you're well-rested and hydrated leading up to the photoshoot. Remember that you’ll look your best if you’re feeling your best. Get lots of beauty sleep, and drink lots of water — this will help you feel your best and reduce the likelihood of bloating or swelling. Pack enough snacks and water for the shoot too, and take frequent breaks — you need it as a pregnant mother.
An experienced maternity photographer will be able to gauge when you're tired and give you plenty of rest in between, but you should also be tuned in to your body enough to know when you're starting to droop. Don't be afraid to ask for a break.
8. Relax and enjoy!
Finally, remember that the primary goal of the maternity photoshoot is to celebrate the beauty and excitement of pregnancy with your partner and family. Relax, enjoy the process, take this time to bond, share in the joy and let your love and happiness shine through in the photos. On top of looking good, we hope you have a fabulous time too!
